The video cameraman is standing at approximately the same place I was standing for the still photo above. Note the speed at which Kenny travels the full distance of the front straight.

Yamaha’s engineers went all out by taking a TZ750 GP road racing engine — capable of 200 MPH — and dropping it into a dirt-track frame, for Kenny Roberts to pilot on dirt mile ovals.

The quote above is what Kenny said after completing his first race with it — and winning. The rule books were changed and by year’s end it was disqualified for any future dirt track events.

The motor they used is the same one as in the 750GP road racing machine, captured in my black and white photo, titled: SPEED.

The above photo was taken at the San Jose Mile. I was standing at the start/finish line, which would mean he was passing me running wide open, likely around 150 MPH.

Equipment: a manual Nikon FM with a 200 MM Nikkor lens, loaded with Kodachrome 64. Professionally scanned at an optical 4000-ppi.

In about 1979, I took the team photo of Roberts-Lawwill Racing (right) at the San José Fairgrounds.
